The Year in a Garden

Cyanotype Prints from the Flora at Burton Agnes Hall

From May 2019 – March 2020 Jill worked on an artist’s residency at Burton Agnes Hall in East Yorkshire. She used the beautiful walled garden as inspiration for a new body of work capturing the garden throughout the seasons. An exhibition of the finished work was postponed, it finally opened on Saturday 19th June – Saturday 31st July 2021. It was on display in The Garden Gallery inside the main Hall.

The project began in May 2019 and Jill visited the Hall collecting plants and flowers in most months throughout the year. The flora was packed into Jill’s botanical press and taken back to her home studio where she created the cyanotype prints in her own garden.

The images were created using a combination of traditional and contemporary cyanotype techniques. Almost all of the images were exposed outdoors regardless of the time of year, with a few exceptions where a UV lamp was required due to particularly poor weather conditions.

The project extended to include flora collected from the woodland at Burton Agnes Hall which is famed for it’s impressive display of snowdrops in late winter. Autumn leaves, ferns, snowdrops and winter aconites from the woodland were used to make a selection of prints for the final exhbition. This is a small gallery of images providing a flavour of the project and you can read a it more about the hanging of the exhibition on Jill’s blog

Some of the original cyanotypes from the exhibition are now available to purchase from Jill’s Etsy shop.
